Kansas State University is the only major university in the world offering specialized degrees that prepare graduates for professional careers in the global grain industry. These unique degrees (Bachelor of Science in Milling Science and Management (MSM), Bakery Science and Management (BSM), and Feed Science and Management (FSM)) were established decades ago to meet the demand for job-ready graduates in the grain, feed, milling and bakery industry. Graduates of these programs can today be found in leadership positions throughout the global grain industry. In addition to core classroom studies in mathematics, chemistry, nutrition, business and engineering, K-State's unique facilities allow students to gain hands-on experience working in pilot-scale mills and bakery facilities.
The Brains for Grains Recruitment and Scholarship Program was developed in collaboration with our
Department Advisory Board . It asks our industry stakeholders to partner with us in the recruitment and retention of future employees by helping to fill the MSM, BSM and FSM pipelines at K-State through an innovative approach that consists of the following steps:
1. Request a recruitment kit and commit to annually visit 5 local high schools and one area college
2. Adopt at least one student recruit and offer a part-time or summer job opportunity while enrolled locally
– Mentor your student recruit for a grain industry career
3. Sponsor at least one student recruit taking classes at a local college and pay tuition for 6-12 KSU distance learning course credits in MSM, BSM or FSM
– Bring recruits to campus at least once to meet our faculty and students
4. Sponsor at least one student recruit to enroll in MSM, BSM or FSM and fund “full ride” scholarship at K-State
5. Offer your student recruit(s) and our other students summer internships and full-time employment
6. Take advantage of complimentary K-State scholarships
– Legacy Scholarship, Midwest Student Exchange Program, Diversity Scholarship
Participation in this program will provide your company with an ongoing pipeline of fresh, local talent with the needed skills and training to operate at a high level within your organization. Students on this scholarship may return during the summer and at semester break to work as interns. Turnover of these employees should be limited as they are able to return home to live and work. Lastly, scholarship funding for this program by the company will be tax-deductible as a contribution to the KSU Foundation.
